High cost of flying forces jet-setters to trade down

Singer Michelle Williams isn’t ashamed to admit that she’s flying with the people these days. The former Destiny’s Child member is zipping around the country promoting a third solo album, called “Unexpected,” logging flight hours that would impress even jaded business travelers.

Williams could easily do telephone interviews with radio DJs, but hanging out on the air and in person can result in more airtime for her music. During one recent promotional week, Williams flew from Chicago to New York, then to Minneapolis, Las Vegas and San Francisco before flying back to New York and then to Chicago.

“It gets taxing, and this year it’s very costly,” Williams said. She books a coach-class ticket and uses the free miles she earns to upgrade to first class when she can. Sometimes, she just stays in coach.

“We all have to adjust. We just have to deal with it,” Williams said. “These prices are not going to come down.”

Video Premiere: Michelle Williams’ The Greatest

Former Destiny’s Child’s singer, Michelle William, has debuted a music video to promote her new love single “The Greatest”. Starting to roll with a capture of her donning a black tube gown and singing the song on her bed, the video mostly shows Williams’ deep love for her boyfriend. Her on-bed appearance is sometimes cut with another scene where her man is on the field coaching his football players.

“The Greatest” is a ballad song listed on her third solo studio album “Unexpected”, which has been in stores since October 7 in the U.S. “I’m making a statement with this album – Michelle is feisty. She’s not the quiet one. She’s not at church 24/7. She’s not on the altar sprinkling blessed oil everywhere. She has fun,” she speaks of her latest record.

“It was like my mother gave me the permission to just make a fun album, not to be so serious. Happiness is a choice, so I choose to be happy,” the Illinois-bred singer explains further. “I’m in love with gospel. It’s my foundation. But you’ve got to be really committed to that genre of music. I’m not ready to take that step yet.”

Unexpected review

SURVIVOR: Michelle Williams is proof that good girls sometimes finish first. The native of Rockford, Ill., got her start singing as a soloist and as a member of gospel groups until she earned a background-singing gig with Monica, which led to her invitation to join Destiny’s Child. Unexpected, her third solo CD and her first nongospel collection, finds her immersed in Euro-edged dance-pop grooves.

INDEPENDENT WOMAN: Ms. Williams’ coy, girlish vocals are as airy as the tracks, but able to add depth with shades of emotion. “Thank U” veers from devoted to dissing as she tells an ex that his shoddy treatment helped her find someone better. The Stargate-produced “Stop This Car” finds her regretting a relationship’s now-aimless path. The title track is her sultriest recording yet, a hypnotic kiss-off (”Did you really think you could call the shots, I wouldn’t figure it out or connect the dots?”) throbbing with righteous revenge as she enjoys the comeuppance for a man who’s taken advantage of her once too often.

BOTTOM LINE: Except for the tepid “Too Young for Love” and the vapid “Private Party,” Unexpected is a frothy autumn treat.

Michelle destined for solo success

Like the bird depicted in a tattoo just beneath her shoulder, Michelle Williams is spreading her wings and flying solo these days.

It’s hard to imagine what could be left for the 28-year-old to accomplish. She’s been a member of Destiny’s Child, the best-selling female group of all time. She’s dabbled in TV, on UPN’s Half & Half and Fox’s Celebrity Duets.

And she’s earned accolades on the theater stage, succeeding Toni Braxton in the Broadway version of Aida in 2003 and portraying blues singer Shug Avery in the Chicago stint of The Color Purple in 2007. It was that role that emboldened Ms. Williams to leave the gospel realm and create her edgier, dance-pop collective, Unexpected, which hit stores last week.

“Playing Shug Avery put a little fire in my soul,” she says during a phone chat from her home base in Chicago. “I even told myself in the beginning that I couldn’t do it, but I carried some of her boldness with me.”

Unexpected uses an intriguing mix of songwriters and producers (Jim Jonsin, Jackpot, Rico Love and Stargate) to create its airy, dance-club-ready tracks. Its first single, “We Break the Dawn,” hit No. 1 on the Hot Dance Airplay chart in July. The fact that Solange Knowles was co-writer almost kept Ms. Williams from adding it.

“I had tried to make it a point not to work with Beyoncé or Solange because of all the comparisons, but when I heard the demo, I had to put all that aside. I was very, very, very hands-on with this project. Every producer, each song that is on the album, I chose, so that was some pressure. Rico Love ended up writing the bulk of my album, and I had always prayed that I could have chemistry with someone who could bring out the best in me, and I’ve found that in him.”

With songs that sound more hip than holy, Unexpected might turn off some fans, but she refuses to focus on that.

“I love gospel because it was my foundation, but at the same time, I just wasn’t ready to be committed to the genre,” she explains. “When I was doing gospel (2002’s Heart to Yours and 2004’s Do You Know ), I still had to answer these type of ‘why’ questions, and I can’t please everybody.”

Not that she has much time to try, with her promotional schedule, script-reading and minority shareholder ownership in the WNBA team Chicago Sky. As far as her career is concerned, “I want fans to feel that I was a risk-taker, somebody who came from Rockford, Ill., and just made it happen.”

And about those pesky haters? Ms. Williams shrugs them off. “If my skin ain’t tough by now,” she laughs, “then I’m in the wrong business.”

Unexpected review: An unexpected dance soul surprise

Experimenting with digitized vocal effects and incorporating a lot of up-tempo club tracks, Michelle Williams’s latest release, Unexpected is a welcome surprise for R&B fans.

The former child of destiny is no stranger to working alone, previously releasing two gospel albums, but this is her first foray into the solo R&B game.

Williams’ distinct voice was always more raspy and soulful than the rest of Destiny’s Child, and on the self-offered Unexpected, listeners can expect just that. She takes willing ears on a ride during tracks like “Lucky Star.” The song starts off as a slow-tempo study, but switches up mid-track into an upbeat, techno showcase.

However, Williams does not stick to the same typical lyrical background like many R&B female artists do, singing of stories of being in love, breaking up and heartache. Instead, she has a broad range of subject matter for listeners who are tired of the same old tedious songs. “We Break the Dawn,” featuring Flo Rida, “Stop the Car,” “Hello Heartbreak” and other tracks are purely enjoyable club songs, perfect for dancing or blasting through the radio speakers.

Stronger tracks on the album show the range of Michelle’s voice and provide deeper meanings. “Too Young For Love” talks about two teenage lovers who have to fight to be together because their parents don’t believe their feelings are real due to their young age.

“The Greatest,” albeit one of the slower tracks on the album, is replay-worthy, as Williams’ lyrics and sultry voice mesmerize throughout.

“I never used to smile until you showed me how/ baby you’re the greatest/ and I was reaching for the stars/ I didn’t have to look so far/ ’cause loves where you are/ and how I realize that the star is in your eyes/ cause you’ll always shine/ baby you’re the greatest,” sings Williams.

Unexpected is Ms. Williams’s strongest release to date and her first R&B effort is sure to take listeners by surprise.
