Beyonce: Split Personality

It’s safe to say, Sasha Fierce is getting almost as much attention as her as her superstar alter-ego, Beyonce Knowles.

“Her cousin Angie gave her that name,” mother Tina Knowles reveals in the December issue of Elle Magazine. “We’d tease Beyonce about having a split personality. Beyonce would come off stage between sets and start screaming, ‘What’s wrong with you? Where’s my shoe?’ ‘Uh-oh,’ we’d say, ‘Sasha is here.’”

Now pushing both a new album, I Am Sasha Fierce, and the film Cadillac Records, the 27-year-old is busier than ever. But the singer credits the years she spent in Destiny’s Child as keeping her grounded in the midst of her rising fame.

“We were really sheltered,” she says of those days with fellow Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. “We would get on the tour bus and read the bible.”

In April, Beyonce married longtime sweetheart and rap mogul Jay Z in a secret NYC ceremony. This year the couple topped Forbes list of richest couples with an estimated worth of $162 million. But the singer says it bothers her when comparisons are made between her family (who all work for team Beyonce in one way or another) and another rich and famous African-American family.

“I grew up upper-class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar,” she recalls. “We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons. But I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation.”

World Music Awards a Crazy Affair For Michelle Williams

If songstress Michelle Williams looks a little breathless hosting the World Music Awards airing on Fox tomorrow (12/2), there’s good reason. “I didn’t find out until the day of the show that I was going to be hosting,” reveals the former Destiny’s Child member. “It was crazy. I knew I was going to be a presenter. Then I got a phone call, like, ‘Hey, would you be, like, into co-hosting with Jesse Metcalfe?’ So I went from presenting a single award to hosting the entire show with him. They were making the script as I got there, passing out pages.

“I don’t know if someone else was supposed to be hosting the show before,” she adds. “I didn’t complain. Hey, it was a blessing. I wasn’t doing anything else anyway.”

Taped last month in Monaco, the show, which boasts plenty of star power with performances by Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and Beyonce, among others, sounds like a jumbled affair behind the scenes. Michelle says, “I’m kind of glad it wasn’t live. There were people walking in front of the teleprompter, and nobody said, ‘Yo, sit down.’ We had to adlib. It really was an absolute blast.”

Michelle says she “literally ran into Alicia Keys. I was trying to climb up to the stage after a wardrobe change. There was so much stuff going on. I was just trying to find my way back to the stage, and I walked smack dab into her and someone else having a conversation. I was like, ‘Oh, my God!’ It was such an honor to see her, and her performance was awesome.”

She also got a chance to reconnect with Beyonce and her sister Solange, “another reunion. Of course we met up and talked. And I talked to Estelle. I thoroughly enjoy her music,” adds Michelle, who has her own critically hailed “Unexpected” album in release.

She was so tired by the end of the event, she skipped the after-parties and went straight back to her hotel room, “ordered room service and went to bed. I didn’t hear about Jesse falling until I got back to the States,” she adds, referring to Metcalfe’s 40-foot fall at one of the after-parties. He was rushed to the hospital and is recovering, she was glad to hear. It was another drama of the night, she notes — “Drah. Mah.”

Beyonces world tour 2009

MediaTakeOut.com has EXCLUSIVELY learned that Beyonce is putting together the final touches to her upcoming 2009 world tour.

And according to our snitch in Bey’s camp, the bootylicious diva will be bringing former Destiny’s Child bandmates Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland along with her. The insider tells MediaTakeOut.com, “It’s not going to be an official ‘Destiny’s Child tour’ – more of a Beyonce tour with Kelly [Rowland] and Michelle [Williams] as the opening acts.

Destiny’s Adults

It sounds like a joke, right? And not an especially good one. But Beyonce isn’t kidding. She really has adopted a laughably bad alter ego to serve as part of the title of her new album, the former Destiny’s Child lead singer’s third solo set. Why? Well, it’s not exactly clear. The official reason is to put still more distance between Beyonce’s public and private personas. Ultimately though, what adopting the alter ego ”Sasha Fierce” does at this stage is put distance between Beyonce’s publicly professed happiness and the dark, unstable messages conveyed in her lyrics.

In promoting the new album, Beyonce says, ”I’m in a very good place right now, I’m very happy.” Mrs. Jay-Z also notes that the album can be viewed as her diary. Further, she notes that the main goal is to write songs that inspire her female fans, or at least make them relate to her.

But woe unto them if they’re single. That frothy new single of hers is all the rage in clubland, on YouTube, and even earned a Saturday Night Live spoof. ”Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” has a ”Crazy in Love” headiness about it, and you can’t resist its musical appeal. But lyrically, it has to rank as one of the most un-affirming ”single” anthems ever, as Beyonce leads a chorus telling the whole world she’s only single because her man didn’t ask for her hand in marriage. Total dependence on another for one’s happiness is nothing to lead a chorus in song about — much less pretend its some kind of female-empowerment anthem. This is decidedly not ”Independent Women, Part III.” And doesn’t it seem strange that a recently married singer is talking about being single, anyway?

Last month, Michelle Williams released her third solo set. You probably missed Williams’ first two albums, since they were gospel affairs, quietly released while Destiny’s Child was still together and ruling the pop charts. Now that the trio is no longer, Williams seems to have reasoned that gospel is no way to maintain a career chartered by the Destiny’s Child juggernaut. So Unexpected is a completely secular set, and one that she says is inspired by her love of club music and dancing. It’s a love lacking in passion.

Williams, who has also starred in Aida on Broadway and in the touring version of The Color Purple, has a pretty, bright voice, but lacks Beyonce’s pizzazz. Most of the songs on Unexpected are as subtle and smooth as she seems to be — perfectly pleasant and winsome, but they don’t pop and provoke in the Destiny’s Child mold. There are several songs that could or should be hits. ”Thank You” is hardly the sweet ballad it sounds like, and all the better for it. ”I want to thank you, for losing me,” Williams coos to her ex. ”I almost loved you forever, never would have found someone better.” Both ”Stop This Car” and the title track are moody mid-tempo hip-hop-styled songs that show real sparks of heat.

Unfortunately, Williams is too cool and too timid on too many other songs here, including current single ”The Greatest,” which plays it safe in the shallow end of the pop pool. You might call that unexpected from a Destiny’s Child alum, true. It’s just not the kind of surprise you hope for.

Bullies made my life hell

Michelle Williams has revealed that the girls at her school used to beat her up regularly.

The former Destiny’s Child singer says she was called names, made fun of and hit.

‘I still don’t know why I was singled out,’ she tells You. ‘I can only assume it was because my mother dressed me nicely and I was smart and applied myself at school.

‘The girls were the worst. They would call me names, hit me and threaten to kill me.

‘Once I was beaten so badly that the school arranged for a patrol person to walk me home every day.’

But Michelle, 28, is glad she was different to the kids that tormented her.

‘Now they have multiple children, probably by multiple fathers, and some of them have been in prison,’ she says.

‘I’m blessed I didn’t follow that curve.’
